Choose a recent issue highlighted in the media which relates to your specific business discipline/field (eg HRM, Sport and Recreation, Tourism and Events, Management/Business, Logistics and Supply Chain Management). Complete the following three tasks:

Task 1: Writing Genres 50%

In groups of 3, create the following documents relating to this issue:

1. A simplified summary of the issue for a non-business person (around 250 words).
2. A letter to the Editor (eg of a newspaper) highlighting a particular concern about the issue (eg ethical issue, impact on the environment, social justice) (around 250 words).
3. An information ‘brief’ in the form of an email for either an external stakeholder (eg media, shareholders, government, the public) or an internal stakeholder (eg employees, senior management, public relations department) (around 250 words).
4. Individual writing task: A brief reflection comparing and contrasting the documents written for target audiences in Tasks 1-3 above as related to the original news item. Provide your personal perspective on which type of document suits your writing style (no more than 250 words).

Collate the three written pieces, along with the individual reflections, into one document and submit to Learnonline once only. Ensure that you include all the names of the students in your group on the cover page.

Task 2: Presentation 35%

1. As a group, present the three styles of writing (10 minutes) using whichever media you believe is most appropriate for the task (egPowerpoint presentation, video, role-play, etc). All students are required to present equally. Students who do not present will not receive a grade. Please bring a USB to save the recording of your presentation, and a hard-copy printout (2 slides per page) of the presentation to assist with marking.

Task 3:Self-evaluation of presentation skills15%

• Look at and objectively evaluate your own performance in the presentation tasks from Assignments 1 and 2.
• Comment on the positive features of your presentation skills.
• Comment on the negative features of your presentation skills.
• What strategies can you implement to improve your presentation skills?
• Have you demonstrated any improvement between the first presentation and the second? Why/why not?
• What are the differences, if any, between presenting individually and as a group member?

Submit the self-evaluation individually to Learnonline, and as a separate document to the group task.

The best way to approach the tasks for this assignment:

• Working individually, find a news item of personal interest to bring to your class for discussion.
• Select (and agree on) a single news item of interest with students in your common discipline area/allocated group.
• Analyse this item and determine its appropriateness for various tasks outlined.

·         Figure out the main message of the news item.

• Brainstorm the main stakeholders, some related issues, effects or areas of concern.
• Identify your target audiences.
• Collaborate to decide on style and elements that should be included in each of the texts, considering your target audiences.
• Decide on how to share the workload.
• Decide on a plan to ensure all group members are progressing as agreed.
• Write up the individual task: Compare and contrast the three documents according to your own perspective. Remember to include this at the end of the collated assignment, under a separate heading identifying each author. Submit to Learnonline as one document for the whole assignment.
• Prepare your group presentation.
• Complete the self-evaluation about your presentation skills in Assignments 1 and 2, using the self-evaluation template as a basis for the written task.  Students who do not submit this component will lose 5 marks from their individual grade.
